Water used for baby care

Lead testing can focus on the kitchen and other outlets used for bottles, food preparation and drinking.

Sampling design matters

First-draw, flushed or sequential samples can be selected depending on the lead question being investigated.

Measured lead concentrations

Accredited laboratory analysis reports the lead concentration associated with each sampled location.

Lead in water testing for infants

Lead arrives in two forms and only one of them is predictable

01
Identify every point the child meets
Where bottles are made, where they are washed, the tub, and anything used to rinse a pacifier or a toy.
02
Establish the plumbing history
Construction era, any documented replacement and when, recent work in the property or building, and whether the connection outside was ever touched.
03
Agree the standing period in writing
The household is told beforehand not to draw water, and the elapsed hours are entered in the field record.
04
Draw the sequence with screens intact
Bottles filled in order along the supply path, outlet screens undisturbed so the particulate fraction is captured.
05
Read the pattern across the series
Where values rise or fall along the sequence shows whether the fixture, the branch, the riser or the connection is contributing.

Professional Lead in Water Testing for Infants and Young Children

Lead reaches drinking water in two forms. Dissolved lead enters solution from the surfaces water contacts and accumulates with stagnation. Particulate lead consists of fragments of scale or solder carried in the flow and appears when something is disturbed.

Olympian Water Testing carries out professional lead in water testing for families with infants and young children throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Why the Two Forms Produce Different Results

Dissolved lead produces comparable values under comparable conditions. Particulate lead appears intermittently, following a repair, work in the street, a change in flow direction or a valve operated after a long interval.

Collection technique therefore determines what a result represents, which is why outlet screens are left undisturbed so the particulate fraction is captured.

Where Lead Enters

Where water meets lead bearing material it takes some up, and that material may be the service line, the solder at a joint or the brass within a valve or fixture.

Lead bearing parts in service today include well pump and booster pump wetted components, faucet bodies in kitchens and bathrooms, hose bibbs and exterior spigots, water heater nipples and relief valves, ball and gate valves on domestic hot and cold isolation, tub and shower mixing valves, brass pipe fittings including tees, elbows, couplings, unions and adapters, faucet cartridge housings and stems. Measurable lead is returned from lead free fixtures often enough that construction date carries little weight.

Why the Exposure Question Is Sharper for an Infant

EPA estimates that an infant fed mostly on formula prepared with tap water can receive between forty and sixty percent of its lead exposure from the water alone.

No safe level of lead in a child's blood has been identified, and CDC notes that lead poisoning often occurs without obvious symptoms.

Understanding Our Reporting

Our reporting sets out each draw in the sequence, the conditions logged at collection, the method applied, the reporting limit and the measured concentration.

Olympian Water Testing has operated since 1991 with NELAP accredited laboratory analysis, and blood lead testing is ordered by a clinician and answers a different question.

Common questions

How can I reduce uncertainty about lead in water around a baby?
Test the cold-water outlets used for drinking, cooking and bottle preparation, using a sampling plan appropriate to the question being asked.
Can lead come from a faucet even if the service line is not lead?
Yes. Lead can be contributed by several plumbing components, including some faucets, fittings and solder.
Should filtered water be tested for lead too?
If the goal is to verify the water actually being consumed, testing the filtered outlet can be useful. Testing before and after the filter can also show the difference across treatment.
Can a lead result from one bathroom sink represent the kitchen?
Not necessarily. Different fixtures and branch piping can produce different results, so the outlet used for drinking should be sampled when that is the concern.
